Beauty Care Matters: Q & A with Myshel Wilkins

Do you know what’s in your skincare products? Studies have shown that many health challenges and illnesses have a connection to lifestyle practices and habits.

The chemicals that are found in various products have been known to affect the hormones, ph levels, mental functioning, and more.

I had the opportunity to interview Beautycounter consultant Myshel Wilkins on the healthcare side of beauty. Below is our interview.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself.

A: I was born and raised in Kentucky to a missionary father and Ghanaian mother. The oldest of three! I have always had a passion to help people. I believe it came from traveling with my dad on mission trips and wanting so badly to meet the need of those who needed anything from education to food and water. I do several different things but all to help, encourage, and inspire others. I am a singer and songwriter who has toured all around the US with several Grammy award-winning artists. I have my own health and beauty business called Beautycounter. In my business, I educate, advocate, and provide safe and clean beauty products. And lastly,  I am the director of an outreach for a nonprofit missions organization that lovingly serves the beautiful people of Uganda. We help our partners rescue young girls from prostitution, bring doctors with us to treat many in various villages and hold discipleship training classes at several churches, among meeting many other needs.

Q: How did you begin as a beauty consultant?

A: A great influencer and successful broker in my community reached out to me and invited me to learn more about this new business she had started. At first, I thought it was just another beauty MLM company and I had no passion or desire to sell beauty products. But upon hearing more about their mission, how they educate women and empower them with potentially life-saving knowledge and advocate in Washington DC meeting with Congressmen and women to push to change the laws that govern the beauty industry, I knew this was a very different company and that they were not just about beauty, this was a ground-breaking movement that I wanted to be a part of. Especially after just losing a friend to breast cancer at the age of 39. I joined and haven’t looked back!

Q: What inspired you to become a beauty consultant?

A: I lost a friend to cancer and it shook me! Seeing someone close to my age pass away moved me to do more research about cancer and the ways one can get it! I wanted to safeguard myself and my loved ones. In my studies, I found some very alarming information about the beauty industry and how there are many chemicals used in our products to create a smooth texture, extend the shelf life, and prolong the fragrance. These are the same chemicals that can be harmful to the body when absorbed. Our skin is our largest organ and most people are unaware that most of what you put on your skin will be absorbed within 26 seconds. Many of the questionable ingredients in our make-up and personal care items can cause infertility, cancer, life-threatening allergies, hormonal imbalances, fibroids, birth defects among other complications. Even someone who is eating right and exercising can still fall ill because of the toxic products they use daily. This is a silent problem that Beautycounter is bringing to light. I love that they are not only providing safe, high performing products but are pressing for laws to be changed nationwide!  Did you know that the word “fragrance” that is listed on your products is linked to a “trade secret” in the industry? Companies can hide over 3000 ingredients behind the word “fragrance” and by law, they do not have to disclose what those ingredients are! Did you know that in the EU, they have banned over 1400 ingredients stating that it is illegal to put those specific ingredients in products due to the serious health hazard it can cause? Yet in the United States, they have only banned 30 ingredients. Beautycounter refuses to put over 1800 questionable ingredients in our products and we hide no secrets within our makeup, skincare and body products! Most people don’t know these facts and assume that the products they use have been tested for safety before putting it on the market and that is simply not true! This also goes for products marketed for children and babies. This is NOT ok!!! It is now one of my passions to educate and hopefully change the buying culture of one family at a time.

Q: How long have you been in this industry/business?

A: I’ve been with Beautycounter for 5 years.

Q: What is your career and educational background?

A: I have a BS from Tennessee State University! I studied history and political science. It’s pretty awesome how my beauty business has to lead me to face our government on the state and national level, to bring about change!

Q: What are the advantages of becoming a Beauty Counter consultant?

A: Meeting such inspirational women from all walks of life. Many of our consultants are cancer survivors and have made it their mission to educate their communities about using safer products. I get to be a part of a beautiful moment that will positively affect upcoming generations. I can make as much money as I want. Don’t get me wrong. You have to work hard to build your business but it is very rewarding. There are women who make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in this business. I know women who make 10- 20 thousand a MONTH! This is a new company so getting in on the ground level has great advantages! It’s on-trend! Women want to feel and look beautiful but don’t want to potentially risk their health to do so. The beauty industry is changing and more women are asking questions about what’s in their products. Beautycounter is ahead of the game and is thriving because of it!

Q: What type of skills are needed to become a beauty consultant?

A: No skill is needed other than being willing to learn and have a passion to want to help people.  I’ve seen all types of women succeed in this business. The Ivy league Dr. to the stay at home mom. All are brilliant and all build their business to fit their lives!

Q: How does the social, economic, environmental and political sectors impact your industry/business?

A: Here are a few of our partners :

Breast Cancer Prevention Partners work to prevent breast cancer by eliminating our exposure to toxic chemicals and radiation linked to the disease. Why we love them: Breast Cancer Prevention Partners are a founding member and national coordinator of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a coalition working to eliminate dangerous chemicals from cosmetics and personal care products.

Healthy Child Healthy World empowers parents and caregivers to protect children from harmful chemicals.  Why we love them: Their easy actions and tips help families create safer environments for children to flourish.

Environmental Working Group (EWG) uses the power of research and information to protect public health and the environment. Why we love them: Their Skin Deep Cosmetics Database allows you to search over 73,000 products for hazardous ingredients.

Beautycounter believes that people should never be asked to compromise their health for beauty. Our mission: To educate families about the need for safer chemicals and products, and to work to be a part of the solution by creating safe and effective skin care and beauty products. We also provide an economic opportunity for women who join us as Independent Sales Consultants. A strong commitment to health & safety is our company’s foundation. Environmental Commitment: Beautycounter was founded by a team of social entrepreneurs who take into account society, environment, and profits when we make business decisions. We know that there is a lot that needs fixing in the world, and we will use the power of business and strategic partnerships to get moving in the right direction. We are committed to product performance, safety, and accessibility above all. We have a robust list of chemical ingredients that we will never use in our products, and we screen each ingredient for potential long-term health impacts before we approve it for use. We endeavor to source natural and organic ingredients when possible, and when our safety, accessibility and performance goals are not compromised by doing so.  Some of our products contain only natural ingredients, and others have a mix of lab-made and natural ingredients, all of which have passed our stringent safety screen. Nothing in our products are harmful to the human body. PERIOD!! We are a certified Benefit Corporation, which means we put people and the planet BEFORE profit!  We team up with other forward-thinking business to share resources and brainstorm solutions, and we do not test our cosmetics on animals. We make every effort to use post consumer recycled content in both paper and plastic materials, and source plastics that are recyclable in most communities. We do not use the types of plastic that are most likely to leach toxic chemicals (polycarbonate plastic can leach BPA, PVC can leach phthalates, and polystyrene never biodegrades, so we avoid all three of those materials).  We use glass bottles for some of our products, and will look into expanding our use of glass over time, though glass can be expensive/ and carbon-intensive to ship and requires more secondary packaging to protect it. We have made efforts to reduce the use of secondary packaging (outer boxes for bottles), and use FSC-certified paper for all packaging.“In order to be successful in business and in our social mission, we have to reject the short-term thinking that got all of us into the current environmental crisis. Beautycounter recognizes that we can’t do it alone—strategic partnerships are absolutely necessary to create meaningful, lasting change. We’re proud to partner with to offset our carbon emissions, and for guidance on reducing our overall footprint.”

Q: What message do you want to share through Beautycounter?

A: Women have unknowingly had to choose between health and beauty. Beautycounter thinks that’s nonsense! We should be able to enjoy both! And we want future generations to enjoy laws that will protect them from the self – regulated companies who have no accountability when making a product with only $$$ in mind. I won’t be anyone’s guinea pig, I’m going to be intentional about my health, invest in the future me, protect my family, educate my community and impact the nation with new laws. This is a super empowering company!!!

Q: How does clean beauty affect/ better the environment?

A:  It keeps us all healthier! The air, animals, water sources, and humanity. We are about being responsible and caring for every aspect of life.

Q: How does clean beauty improve the health and lifestyle of others?

A:  We all have a God-given purpose to fulfill in this earth. Who wants to be so focused on their health issues and inability to live life to the fullest because we are worried about doctor bills and other health-related stressors.  I want us all to live life abundantly focused on fulfilling our call without the distractions that we can defeat by making the necessary changes that will improve the quality of our lives! Our health is our greatest asset. Let’s invest in it and do our best to help others do the same.

Q:  Where do you see your industry/business in the next year, five years or ten years?

A: Leading the beauty industry as the #1 health-focused beauty company that is making a great impact on our nation and the laws that govern the safety of our products. Beautycounter is projected to be a BILLION dollar company in the next 3 years! I will definitely get my share of that as I build my business and prepare to launch out to start other business ventures in the future. Beautycounter will be the foundation upon which I’m able to build other projects and fulfill other visions I have in my heart.  🙂

Q: What advice and encouragement would you give someone who is starting a clean beauty journey?

A: First of all, I’m proud of you! It’s a big deal to be one of the first in your family to start a new mindset and buying culture in your generation. I used to get tons of jokes hurled at me in the beginning. Everyone won’t understand, but over time, my family has seen the importance of what I’m doing and what I’ve shared with them over the years. Many are now using safer products and I’m so so happy about it!!! Link up with other people with the same interest! It’s always good to connect with like-minded, health-conscious people. They will keep you accountable and inspire you as you learn together.

Q: What is your encouragement to aspiring beauty consultants?

A: No matter where you are I’d love to help educate, train, and help you build your business! I love mentoring new beauty consultants that join my team. If you want to make an impact while building a meaningful business, I’d love to connect with you! Especially women of color because the products that are marketed to women of color are the most toxically loaded products on the market! They are cheaply made with cheap ingredients which usually means it’s not safe to use. Our communities are the last to know about the harm that can come from using toxic chemicals daily! I love to educate ALL women, but definitely want to educate the community who is clueless about the level of toxicity they are exposed to each day!

Q:  Any other related information, website/page links, and recordings?
